Coed Glas is an existing primary school located on Ty Glas Avenue in Llanishan, Cardiff. Following a strategic assessment of the educational requirements of Cardiff by the local authority, it was determined that this school deserved the increase in capacity to meet local demand and increase from a 2 Form Entry to a 2.5FE. The project involved the construction of a new threestorey extension named ‘The Learning Cube’ by its students, together with areas of refurbishment within the school, a new MUGA and improved play environments overall.
The new extension offers two new classrooms, a selection of staff areas and extra storage. Stacked over three stories, users can access and dwell in an assortment of spaces varying in scale, brightness and privacy. This offers teachers and students alike the ability to adapt their environment to accommodate varying teaching styles.
This facility has come as a breath of fresh air to its students and staff – offering valuable and coveted space, comfort and a sense of ownership and pride. This complementary yet bold proposal acts as a statement that aligns with the schools vision to ‘develop strong roots for learning, behaviour and wellbeing’ and their mission statement to be a ‘hub of their local community’.
