Turf Cutting Ceremony at the Milner Centre for Evolution

A turf cutting ceremony has marked the start of building work on the new Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath.

The event was an opportunity to set out the vision for the Centre towards shaping society’s views on evolution and its many applications. Business Development Director Jon Williams and Operations Manager Stuart Brown attended the ceremony along with Dr Jonathan MilnerPresident and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell DBE DL and The Mayor of Bath.

The Milner Centre for Evolution will comprise the design and construction of a two-storey research facility incorporating laboratories, offices and a seminar room for academics researching evolution. Located in the southwest of the campus it is part of the Department of Biology & Biochemistry and named after Dr Jonathan Milner, who donated £5m towards establishing the centre.

Due to open in 2018 the Milner Centre will be the first of its kind for evolutionary science research and will boast a large central breakout space designed to encourage collaboration, deliver the outreach programme and give lectures. In addition, principal investigator and postdoctoral / postgraduate offices will be supported by new research laboratories, providing advanced research facilities.

The project will be undertaken in collaboration with Stride TreglownMann Williams and Hoare Lea.

The first turf was cut by Dr Jonathan Milner and President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell DBE DL.

Business Development Director Jon Williams said: "We are delighted to have been awarded such a prestigous project. The Milner Centre for Evolution will be the first of its kind in the UK and only the second in the world to focus on evolutionary research. It is a real privelage to be involved in such a unique and cutting edge project for the University of Bath".
