INDOOR SURF CENTRE

The project involved an extension to the existing Cardiff International White Water Centre (CIWW) to house a new indoor ‘Flowrider’ Surf Facility. The facility will allow CIWW to connect with the extremely popular boardriding lifestyle that includes surfing, skateboarding, bodyboarding, wakeboarding, skimboarding and snowboarding.

Almost the entire interior of the new building is occupied by the Flowrider and large spectator lounge. We incorporated bold blocks of colour on the walls to animate the visitor space and contrast with the vivid blue and stark white of the surfing area.

The new surf rider facility uses submersible propeller pumps (located in the pool below the ride) to inject a three-inch sheet of water over the engineered ride surface at up to 70mph creating a surfable wave. The resulting wavelike shape permits people of all ages and skill level to surf the wave face.

The surf facility enhances the existing Centre, increasing its appeal and adds another dimension to the
Cardiff International White Water Centre, turning it into a leading South Wales water sports resort, raising its profile locally, nationally and beyond.
