The development is located on the City of Bristol College campus at Ashley Downand will provide 60 new residential apartments within the existing 1850s Grade II Listed Brunel House, together with additional 32 flats in a new building on the adjoining car park site. The apartments will comprise a mixture of flats, duplexes, and studios.
The scheme proposes the refurbishment of the main building with the removal of unsympathetic modern additions in favour of a small extension constructed to match the existing buildings in appearance, and the provision of landscaping to enhance their setting. The removal of the main extensions, in particular, will create sheltered garden courts which will provide practical and visual amenities.
Existing historic features will be retained and repaired where appropriate. Modern openings and alterations which remain visible following removal of extensions and infill will either be replaced with windows or wall as in the original building or be made good in a neat, sympathetic manner.
The apartments will be constructed to the highest thermal and environmental standards compatible with the building’s historical status, and the financial demands which that imposes on the overall development.
