This award-winning project involved the design and construction of a new Community Primary School to amalgamate Burry Port Infant and Burry Port Junior schools by redeveloping the existing Infants School site.
The new Burry Port Community Primary School provides accommodation for 210 pupils along with a 30 space nursery class and Flying Start crèche.
The project included minor remodelling of the existing infants building and two new extensions to accommodate a Studio Pod building and a two-storey Junior building.
The Studio Pod is a multi-functional and open plan space for key internal circulation links between the new Junior building and the existing Infant building. The new Junior building houses four new classrooms with shared toilet and cloak provisions. Each new building is linked by a covered timber colonnade that also connects back to the existing building. The external environment has become a newly remodelled courtyard space.
The new Junior building has achieved Passivhaus Certification and the Studio Pod has been built to Passivhaus Standards. This makes Burry Port the first Primary School in Wales to achieve the rigorous energy standard. The new Studio Pod is constructed using Brettstapel which is also a first for Primary School construction in Wales.
