The project required the full design and construction of a community centre for the Gorseinon Community Trust. This included a number of units that are available for lease commercial units, main reception and administration area, cafeteria and kitchen, main multi-purpose function hall with further smaller multi-purpose rooms, atrium, and a self-contained crèche. This community facility also has extensive adult learning classes both in the day for retired people and in the evening for the general public.
We incorporated as many educational elements within the building services itself to allow all the visitors to understand how “green” buildings work including; a large display screen continually revealing the energy saves through the PV’s and the volume and percentage of grey water that is used by the toilets.
External works included hard and soft landscaping, planting of trees, site boundary fencing, construction of main access road, associated surface water drainage, road markings and signs, street lighting, and footways across the site.
The project achieved BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and included innovative elements such as a biomass boiler, rainwater harvesting with recycling to be reused as grey water, roof window actuators with rain sensors and PV’s, earth tubes, and ground source heating.
