The project involved the design and construction of a replacement Welsh School to BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards. This award-winning scheme merges two primary schools into one and incorporates a wildlife garden and various learning resources.
Internally this included a community room, IT suite, multipurpose hall, kitchen, administration wing, and classrooms. There is also a separate self-contained nursery block and a caretaker’s residence.
Innovative elements included solar heating and PV’s, rainwater attenuation through a pond with a reed bed that can also be used as a teaching aid, roof window actuators with rain sensors.
External works initially involved the stripping of topsoil and storage for re-use before the site was re-profiled to formation level. These preparatory external works were followed by the delivery of new utility services, a primary access road, and large car park with an associated drainage system, hard and soft playgrounds with lit footpaths around the school’s re-landscaped grounds.
