The project involved the design and construction of 39 new homes and a communal hub at the Gaer in Newport for Derwen Cymru.
The project layout and design reflects Derwen’s aspirations for a flagship older people’s development while also meeting a clearly identified need within Newport.
The design accommodates two communal blocks of self-contained apartments with a central communal hub and four walk-up apartments, providing a total of 39 new homes. Of these new homes, 33 are two-bedroom apartments and 6 are one-bedroom.
Due to the topography of the site, the apartments have glazed balconies to benefit from the views and are split across a number of levels from lower ground floor to second floor, with lift access.
The design also incorporates a roof top garden to maximise the beneficial health and social impacts associated with being actively engaged in gardening, walking and growing vegetables.
Construction takes the form of traditional brick and block built over 4-storey’s.
